Dental Care

Healthy Smile,
Healthy Pet

The Importance
of Dental Care

You might think bad breath is just a normal part of being a pet, but it’s actually the most common sign of dental disease.

Untreated dental disease doesn’t just cause pain; it can lead to serious health issues affecting your pet’s major organs. Worst of all, pets are experts at hiding pain, especially dental pain. By the time they’re 3, most pets have some form of gum disease.

So, what can you do? Book an Oxford Animal Hospital appointment for a professional cleaning.

Our comprehensive dental services can stop these problems before they start, ensuring your pet enjoys a pain-free mouth and a healthy body.

Remember: a healthy mouth is a gateway to a healthy body.

The Link Between
Oral Health
and Overall Health

The bacteria in plaque and tartar don’t just stay in the mouth. They can enter the bloodstream and cause significant damage to vital organs, like the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys.

That’s why treating dental disease is about so much more than just cleaning teeth. It’s about protecting your little companion’s entire body.

Our Comprehensive
Oral Health Approach

From preventative cleanings to treating toothaches and advanced gum disease, we offer complete dental care. We recommend a pet dentist visit every 6 to 12 months.

The COHAT: Our Gold
Standard of Care

A COHAT (Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment) is the most thorough dental procedure. Generally, your pet will spend the day with us as we’ll have to plan and do the procedure.
It includes:

IV Fluids & Thermal Support to treat shock, dehydration, and regulate body temperature.

A Tooth-by-Tooth Exam to check for issues like fractured, worn, or diseased teeth and tooth resorption (common in cats).

A Professional Cleaning & Polishing to remove plaque and tartar.

Addressing Painful Problems, like necessary tooth extractions.

Anesthesia for a Thorough Cleaning

For an effective and stress-free cleaning, general anesthesia is essential. It lets us safely clean below the gumline, where periodontal disease starts, without causing your pet pain or anxiety. Because we use anesthesia, we’ll also conduct pre-op labs and insert an IV drip. Don’t worry, all dental patients are continuously monitored by our team from start to finish.

Seeing the Whole Picture

Up to 60% of dental disease is hidden below the gumline. Dental X-rays are the only way we can see the full extent of your pet’s oral health. These images help us identify painful issues like root abscesses, broken teeth, and bone loss.

Complete Treatment

Once we have a full picture, we meticulously clean and polish each tooth. If any teeth are overly sensitive or too damaged to be saved, we extract them to relieve discomfort and prevent future problems.

A Healthier, Happier Pet

Once we’re all done, your pet goes home with a healthier, pain-free smile.
The immediate benefits: Fresher breath and no more discomfort (even if you didn’t know it was there). The long-term benefit: A healthier life.

Supportive At-Home Tooth Care

A professional cleaning is just the start. We’ll show you how to maintain your pet’s oral health at home with tips on tooth brushing, dental treats, and rinses to keep their smile bright between visits.

Protect Their Health, Start with Their Smile

If your pet isn’t feeling well, our team is here to find out why and create a plan to help them get better.
